KN Energy is one of the largest natural gas pipeline and retail natural gas providers in the world. With more miles of gas pipeline than any other company in the Unites States, KN spans the country, bringing safe, reliable, and clean-burning natural gas to millions of consumers in North America. Additionally, KN Energy is a gas retailer, operating in both regulated and de-regulated environments in many states.
Facing deregulation, KN Energy required substantial re-tooling of their information technology infrastructure. Their three key drivers were to:
• Reduce costs
• Prepare for operations in an open market
• Create the ability to rapidly assimilate new acquisitions
KN’s annual Information technology expenditure exceeded the industry average, and the systems provided were antiquated obsolete, difficult to change/support, and virtually impossible to re-engineer into systems adequate to support operations in a competitive market. Additionally, the company had virtually no experience in electronic data interchange (a key underpinning of deregulation in most states). Finally, the systems were operating at maximum capacity, with no ability to take on the additional processing workload associated with acquisitions. In order to execute KN’s strategy, all eleven enterprise-wide systems had to be replaced within a period of thirteen months.
How Clearview Helped
Clearview consultants worked directly with the KN Executive team to develop and implement a complex and comprehensive project plan to facilitate the company’s objectives. Once the plan was approved by KN’s Board, Clearview consultants were given primary responsibility for overseeing the execution of the plan.
• Replaced all enterprise-wide systems, including (but not limited to) financials, pipeline management, billing/back-office, gas nominations, engineering, EDI, human resources, asset management, and payroll
• Designed and implemented the Customer/360 initiative, which consolidated 82 separate field offices (in four States) into a single customer service center
• Created and executed a pilot program for Automated Meter Reading and Load Profiling;
• Designed and developed the “Simple Choice®” infrastructure, which allowed KN energy to provide third-party products and services (including long-distance, cell, satellite television, wireless internet) to their deregulated customers
Since that project, KN’s market capitalization has increased over 200% to over $12 billion.
