
Alliance Data Systems is the result of the 1996 merger of two entities acquired by venture capital firm Welsh, Carson, Anderson and Stowe: JC Penney's transaction services business (BSI Business Services, Inc.) and The Limited's credit card bank operation, World Financial Network National Bank. The company has more than 600 clients in industries including retail, petroleum, utility, financial services, insurance, hospitality and pharmaceutical markets. Alliance Data manages more than 120 million consumer relationships on behalf of some of North America’s most recognizable companies. Alliance Data Systems processed more than 3.8 billion transactions in 2006 and generated over $7.4 billion in credit sales. Alliance Data was the second-largest outsourcer of retail private label card programs in 2006, with 107 million accounts on file. Through World Financial Network National Bank, the company underwrites the accounts and funds the customer purchases for more than 85 private label credit clients, representing more than $3.6 billion in receivables in 2006. Since their IPO in 2001, Alliance Data has outperformed the market by over 400%. Clearview was initially asked to assist Alliance Data with a senior management request to explore the possibilities of creating a formalized line of business focused on technology outsourcing services. How Clearview Helped This required a presentation to the board discussing the preliminary position regarding the viability of such a service prior to any significant investments. Alliance Data was asked by a number of its current customers to expand its existing capabilities and services. The Position Paper or proof of concept was the first step in addressing its customer requests. Clearview continued with the development of a comprehensive business plan and supported the subsequent implementation of the plan as well.
